Hoodie & Sweatshirt Manufacturer Los Angeles

Essentials Made is a garment-dyed hoodie and sweatshirt manufacturer in Los Angeles.

340 GSM French terry, 100% cotton, cut and sewn in the Arts District of Downtown LA, then dyed as finished garments to your Pantone color.

Hoodie manufacturing happens on our own floor — patterns, cutting, sewing, QC and finishing — with garment dyeing a few blocks away.

Have patterns already? Send them. Don't have patterns yet? Send pictures of a hoodie you love and we replicate it — pattern, grading and sample, all made here.

For the full picture of how production works here, see our Los Angeles clothing and apparel manufacturer guide. Already running a program? Start with cut and sew manufacturing. Making jersey too? See t-shirts and tanks.

Hoodie manufacturers — what we make

Most start from a stock garment and decorate it. We build the hoodie itself.

Most hoodie manufacturers start from a stock garment and decorate it. We build the hoodie itself, from your pattern, in fabric knit for your run.

Brands comparing hoodies manufacturers usually find two kinds of shop. One decorates existing garments. The other builds them. We are the second kind.

The garment is cut and sewn first in greige fabric, which is fabric that has not been dyed yet. Then it goes to our Los Angeles dye house as a finished piece. That is what gives garment-dyed fleece its tonal, lived-in color, and it is the reason the seams and the rib read slightly different from the body.

As a custom hoodie manufacturer we work from your spec, not from a catalog. Pattern making, grading, cutting, sewing, QC and finishing happen in house. Garment dyeing runs through our Los Angeles dye house partner.

Searches for the best custom hoodie manufacturers mostly turn up print shops. Worth knowing before you compare quotes — a decorating price and a cut-and-sew price are not the same number, because they are not the same product.

Sweatpants and crewneck sweatshirts

Hoodies rarely ship alone. Most programs run a matching bottom.

Hoodies rarely ship alone. Most programs here run a hoodie with a matching bottom, and there is a practical reason to build them together.

When two fleece styles use the same fabric and go through the same dye bath, the color matches across both. A hoodie and a sweatpant from the same run read as one set. Ordered separately, they rarely do.

As crewneck sweatshirt manufacturers we run the crew on the same 340 GSM French terry as the hoodie. Same heavyweight rib at the neck, cuffs and hem.

On the bottom side we are a sweatpants manufacturer building joggers, straight-leg sweats and shorts. Most custom sweatpants manufacturers and bulk sweatpants manufacturers work from a house pattern you adjust. We cut yours.

Kids and toddler fleece runs on the same program as adult sizes. It uses less fabric, but the pattern work, the sewing operations and the handling are the same, so it prices the same as the adult style. Worth knowing before you plan a family or mini-me drop.

A hoodie manufacturer in the USA, based in Los Angeles

Nothing finished offshore. Nothing imported and relabeled.

Brands looking for hoodie manufacturers in the USA are usually solving one of two problems. Either they want shorter lead times than an overseas program allows, or they need to say the garment is made here and mean it.

We are a 100% cotton hoodie manufacturer working only in US-knit fabric, cut and sewn in Los Angeles. Nothing is finished offshore and nothing is imported and relabeled.

That applies across the program. Most sweatshirt manufacturers in the USA and sweatpants manufacturers in the USA either hold stock or sew to order. We do neither — we knit the fabric for your run, then build to your pattern.

We are a registered garment manufacturer and SB62 compliant, which is the first thing an established brand checks before placing production.

The fleece — 340 GSM French terry

Flat loops inside, smooth face outside. Structure without the bulk.

French terry is a knit with flat loops on the inside face and a smooth outside face. It is the standard fleece for premium hoodies because it holds structure without the bulk of brushed fleece.

GSM is grams per square meter, the standard way to describe fabric weight. This is the spec we run as standard.

Body fabric

340 GSM

French terry
3-end knit, 100% cotton, knit to order for your run. Dense and structured.

Rib

415 GSM

heavyweight 1x1
Neck, cuffs and hem. Heavier than the body so the trim holds its shape.

Production timeline

6–7 weeks

after deposit
2–3 weeks to knit the fabric, then 4 weeks production.

At 340 GSM this already sits in heavyweight hoodie manufacturer territory. Most brands who come in asking for something heavier change their mind once they handle the sample. So we quote this spec first and let the garment make the case.

If you are searching for a 500 GSM hoodie manufacturer, here is the straight answer. We do not hold a 500 GSM fleece. It can be knit as a custom quality for your run, at premium pricing and a higher yardage minimum. We would want you to approve a swatch before committing. Handle the 340 first.

Brands comparing a high quality hoodie manufacturer against a decorator usually end up looking at two things: what the fabric weighs, and whether the pattern is theirs. Both are worth asking any shop you are quoting.

Construction notes worth knowing

Three things that decide how a garment-dyed hoodie is built.

Drawcord eyelets are sewn, not metal

A garment-dyed hoodie goes through the dye bath and the washer as a finished piece. Metal eyelets corrode or pull out in the machine, so we use sewn eyelets. This is a construction fact, not a preference — if your spec calls for metal grommets, garment dye is the wrong finish for that style.

Hood and rib depth are pattern decisions

Hood height, hood depth and rib depth at the hem are where two hoodies at the same weight start to feel different. These get set at pattern stage from the garment you send us, so send the one that fits closest.

Washes and finishes

Beyond standard reactive garment dye we do pigment dye for a vintage look, mineral wash, and enzyme and silicone washes. We do not do stone wash, hand-sanding or abrasion finishes.

Minimums, and what sets them

Minimums come from the mill, not from us.

Minimums come from the mill, not from us. Fabric is knit to order for your run, and a knitting machine has to run a certain length to be worth setting up.

One style
150 pieces per style
Two or more styles
72 pieces per style, when the styles share one fabric and one dye lot — a hoodie and a sweatpant together, for example
Colors
Split your run across colors with no separate per-color minimum. 150 pieces in three colors is 50 of each.
Sizes
Split evenly by size, or weighted to your sales history

The 72-piece number only exists when styles share fabric. One style on its own starts at 150. The fabric and the rib still have to be bought in full rolls either way, and a single style cannot absorb that.

Rib is the reason. Mills sell rib by the roll and will not cut one, so a small single-style run pays for rib it does not use. Two styles sharing the same rib fix that, which is why the number drops.

These are fleece numbers. Jersey works differently — see t-shirts and tanks for tee and tank minimums.

Production pricing

Two programs, about the same money. One gives you two products.

Two styles, 72 each

$40 – $58

per piece
Around $7,000 for a hoodie and sweatpant program. Two styles sharing one fabric and one dye lot.

One style, 150

$37 – $52

per piece
Around $7,200 for a single hoodie run. Shorts and sweatpants at the lower end, pullover and zip hoodies at the upper end.

Development

$400 – $450

into production
Crewneck $400, hoodie, sweatpant and zip-up $450. Double that for development only.

Those two programs cost about the same. One gives you a hoodie. The other gives you a hoodie and a matching sweatpant, in the same color, with 72 of each instead of 150 of one.

If you are already selling and you do not want stock sitting in a storage unit, that second option is usually the one. You carry less of each style, and you have two products to sell instead of one.

Per piece it costs a little more, because the pattern work, the cutting setup and the rib roll get spread over fewer garments. Above 150 per style the number comes down, though not steeply. Fabric is the largest part of a fleece garment, and its cost per yard barely moves with volume.

Price per style moves with construction. A zipper, a contrast rib, a cargo pocket, a half-zip placket or hand distressing each add labor, so two hoodies at the same weight can price differently. We quote once we see the style.

Pricing excludes trims, printing and embroidery. Those are billed to you directly by the partners who make them.

Hoodie
$450 when you move into production — $900 for development only
Crewneck
$400 when you move into production — $800 for development only
Sweatpant
$450 when you move into production — $900 for development only
Zip-up hoodie
$450 when you move into production — $900 for development only

Development covers the pattern, the fabric and one finished sample, garment-dyed in a single color. If you are producing with us, half the development fee comes off up front. If you only want the pattern and sample, the full fee applies. Half of it is then credited toward production, as long as you start within two months of approving the sample.

Want more than one color at sample stage? Additional colorways are lab dips at $120 per color.

Trims, printing and embroidery

All billed to you directly by the partners who make them.

Trims and labels

We work with Tag Time, a trim maker two miles from our floor. Neck labels, care and size labels, hang tags, drawcords and poly bags. They can make whatever you want, you pay them directly, and we sew everything in. If you already have a trim supplier you like, that works too.

Printing and embroidery

Screen print, embroidery and puff print all go to partner contractors who bill you directly. We build the hoodie and schedule the print. The print shop quotes you once they have your artwork. These costs never sit inside our invoice.

Timeline

Production runs 6–7 weeks after your deposit. That is 2–3 weeks to knit the fabric, then 4 weeks production. Development adds about 2 weeks before that when pattern or sample work comes first.
