Smaller runs carry a higher per-piece cost because real LA cutting, sewing, dyeing, and QC are spread across fewer units. The benefit is lower inventory exposure, faster market testing, and a smarter launch path for brands not ready to jump straight into bulk.
WHY SMALL BATCH COSTS MORE — AND SHOULD: Every fabric we use is knit-to-order from our Los Angeles mill program — not purchased from closeout stock or deadstock rolls. This means your fabric is sourced specifically for your run at a premium over bulk pricing. The upside is significant: when you reorder in Season 2, your fabric matches Season 1 exactly — same weight, same yarn, same hand feel. No closeout supplier can guarantee that. Small runs also spread the same pattern work, dye lot setup, cutting, sewing, and QC across fewer units — which is why the per-piece cost is higher than blanks. You are not paying for blanks. You are paying for a real garment built to your spec, in your color, with your label, made in Los Angeles.
THE RETAIL MATH: These garments are not $40 products. Every piece Essentials Made produces retails at $100 minimum — and most sell for significantly more. The formula is retail = 4x production cost. DTC and Instagram returned the full margin to the brand. A hoodie + sweatpant set from a Capsule Run means $7,250 in → $17,000+ retail potential at sellout. Growth Run: $8,100 in → $51,000+ at sellout. Based on a hoodie + sweatpant set at $176 retail per piece, sold direct-to-consumer.
Small-Batch Cut and Sew Manufacturing in Los Angeles — How Brands Start and Scale
In today's DTC market, speed and discipline matter. Most brands begin with a pattern maker and sample maker in Los Angeles to finalize fit, fabric, and construction before moving into production. Our sewing factory supports brands from first sample through scaled production — all under one Los Angeles cut and sew operation.
Many brands also use our pre-sale program to validate demand before production, allowing them to sell first and produce based on real orders.
Cut and Sew Manufacturing in Los Angeles — Key Questions Before Production
What is the minimum order for cut and sew manufacturing?
Our Capsule Runs start at 72 pieces per style when two or more styles share the same fabric and dye lot. This tier is designed for brands that want to launch a cohesive collection — a hoodie and sweatpant set for example — while keeping inventory exposure under control.
Why does a small-batch run cost more per piece?
Because smaller runs still require real pattern work, cutting, sewing, dyeing, and quality control in our Los Angeles sewing factory — just across fewer units. The advantage is that you reduce dead-stock risk, preserve cash, and validate demand before scaling into larger production.
How long does cut and sew production take?
About 4–5 weeks once fabric is ready and your pre-production sample (PPS) is approved. Pattern development and sampling adds approximately 2 weeks before that.
Why only 100% cotton?
We work exclusively with 100% cotton fleece and jersey from Los Angeles mills for consistent garment-dye results, stronger color saturation, and the premium softness our clients expect. Polyester does not garment dye — 100% cotton is the only path to the depth of color our clients sell at premium prices.

FAQ — Cut and Sew Manufacturing in Los Angeles
Essentials Made is a cut and sew manufacturer in Los Angeles specializing exclusively in 100% cotton, garment-dyed essentials — hoodies, crewnecks, sweatpants, and tees. We do not work with polyester blends, generic blanks, or stock apparel. Every project goes through paid pattern development, a garment-dyed pre-production sample, and local cut and sew production in Los Angeles. We work with independent brands and creators that are already selling and ready to invest in real production — not one-off samples or concept projects.
We cut and sew heavyweight hoodies, crewneck sweatshirts, sweatpants, matching sets, and oversized tees — all in 100% cotton and garment-dyed locally in Los Angeles. Our most popular production is the Capsule Run — a matching hoodie and sweatpant set sharing the same fabric and dye lot for exact color consistency across styles. We do not produce heavily decorated garments, sublimation prints, or polyester-based styles.
Our cut and sew process has five stages. First, pattern development — we create production-ready master patterns with built-in shrinkage compensation of 3 to 5 percent specifically for 100% cotton garment dyeing. Second, pre-production sample — one garment-dyed prototype for fit and construction approval. Third, fabric preparation — we use knit-to-order fabric programs so the same yarn and weight is available for every reorder. Fourth, cutting and sewing — yield-optimized cutting, in-line seam checks, and consistent construction throughout the run. Fifth, dye and QC — enzyme and silicone washes, Pantone-matched colors, and quality control before release.
Shrinkage is one of the most critical technical challenges in garment-dyed 100% cotton production. Every pattern we develop includes engineered shrinkage compensation — typically 3 to 5 percent — built into the width and length tolerances. Our standard allowances are plus or minus half an inch in width and plus or minus three quarters of an inch in length. This means the finished garment after dyeing matches the approved fit exactly, not before. Brands that skip this step end up with garments that shrink unpredictably after washing.
We work exclusively with 100% cotton fabrics sourced from our Los Angeles fabric program. For hoodies and crewnecks we use heavyweight 3-end fleece at 360 GSM — the same fabric across every run for consistency. For sweatshirts we use French terry. For tees we use high-density jersey. All fabrics are knit to order — not deadstock or mystery stock — so the same yarn, weight, and texture is available when you reorder. Polyester does not garment dye and we do not use it.
We offer three cut and sew production tiers. The Capsule Run is 50 pieces per style when two or more styles share the same fabric — perfect for matching sets like a hoodie and sweatpant in the same garment-dyed color, starting at approximately $3,500 per style. The Growth Run is 150 pieces per style for brands ready to improve margins, starting at approximately $7,500 per style. The Collection Run is 300 or more pieces per style for established brands running active productions, quoted per project. All tiers require a 50% deposit to begin.
Our Capsule Run starts at 50 pieces per style when two or more styles share the same fabric and dye lot. This is our entry production tier and works best for matching sets or capsule collections where two or more styles share the same fabric program. Our Growth Run starts at 150 pieces per style and our Collection Run at 300 or more pieces. All tiers include pattern development, garment-dyed sampling, cut and sew production, and QC in Los Angeles.
Pattern development and your pre-production sample take approximately 2 weeks after the project deposit is received. Cut and sew production takes 4 to 5 weeks after sample approval and production deposit. Total timeline from project start to delivery is typically 6 to 7 weeks. All production happens in Los Angeles so there are no overseas shipping delays, customs holds, or communication barriers. Brands can track progress in real time throughout production.
In our process, garments are cut and sewn first in undyed greige fabric, then sent to our Los Angeles dye house as finished garments. The entire garment — seams, panels, trims — absorbs color simultaneously, creating the tonal variation and lived-in texture that piece-dyed fabric cannot replicate. We use enzyme and silicone washes after dyeing to soften the hand feel and set the color. Every color is Pantone TCX matched so your reorders hit the same shade every time.
Yes — this is our replica-first approach and our most common starting point. Send us a reference garment that represents your ideal silhouette. We measure every panel, replicate the construction, adjust proportions for garment-dyed production, and build a master pattern with shrinkage compensation built in. This reduces development time, minimizes revisions, and ensures your production sample matches your vision from the first fitting. The approved pattern becomes your permanent production blueprint for every future run.
Pattern development and sampling requires a deposit to begin — this is a separate paid process before production. Once your pre-production sample is approved, we invoice the production run and require a 50% deposit to start cutting. The remaining 50% is due before delivery. We do not begin any work without a deposit. This structure applies to every project regardless of size and protects both the production schedule and your investment.
Yes. Essentials Made is fully compliant with California SB62, which requires garment manufacturers to ensure fair wages and transparent supply chains throughout their production network. All cutting, sewing, dyeing, and finishing happens within our verified Los Angeles vendor network. Brands that manufacture with us can accurately label their products as Made in Los Angeles and Made in USA. We do not subcontract to unknown facilities or offshore any part of the production process.
Three reasons. First, quality — 100% cotton, garment-dyed, made in Los Angeles with consistent fit across every run. Second, flexibility — we work with independent brands from their first production run through scaling into larger collections, with tiers starting at 50 pieces per style. Third, brand story — Made in Los Angeles on your label justifies premium retail pricing and builds trust with a consumer market that increasingly values transparency and local production. Brands that manufacture with us are not just buying garments — they are building a production program they can reorder and scale.
